Devlog 04: First production sprint has begun!

Intro

First week of production has started!!! Meaning we are no longer in a testing phase, but are finally making a game. As with all things, we start with the basics and the fundamental aspects of our game. But before that we made a planning for our first production sprint.

Art

The art team started finalized the sketches for the main characters and their lances, but also the arena the game takes place in.

Based on that, a first simple blockout was created, just to get a feel for the proportions. We learned that the camera angle in the sketches might have been too zoomed in. The obvious solution is to then zoom out of course. Removing the assets in the foreground leaves more space for the gameplay area. Here is a before and after:

Last but not least, our first two material shaders were created that hopefully will be able function as a base for most of our assets.

Gameplay

The programming team has been at work improving the gameplay loop. With some big changes to the lance fysics and movement.

As you can see the lance behaves a lot better now. Kind of like a pool noodle, and the player interaction has been greatly improved.

But the lance still clips into a lot of objects such as walls and the other players lance. Fear not, as this has been implemented as well.

The lance now bounces like we wanted it to do. Not only is this visually nicer, but mechanically as well, because it changes the way players will have to move, dodge and attack.  Lastly we have a tiny bit more for you. Remember the blockout from a while back? Well it's in the game, PLUS an actual demo of 4 people playing at the same time. It is definitely not one of the programmers with 4 controllers by himself.

It may be a small gif but it is a big leap forward
